Where the Wild Things Are
Ms. Smith proudly worked with Mrs. Swank to create several characters from the book, Where the Wild Things Are. The book was the theme for the RIF program November 17, 2009. Mrs. Swank drew the characters and Ms. Smith gave them color.

Artsonia!

SWANS CREEK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS SHARE THEIR ARTWORK WITH THE WORLD!

Dumfries, VA -- Move Over Famous Artists! Swans Creek Elementary School artists are taking over the spotlight! Maria Smith, the school's Art Teacher, has teamed up with Artsonia, www.artsonia.com -- the world's largest online kid's art museum -- to display the students' artwork. www.artsonia.com/schools/swans1. Visitors can browse the artwork in the school gallery by grade level, or by specific exhibits. Swans Creek Elementary School students join thousands of students from over 100 countries whose artwork is showcased on Artsonia. "This program is a wonderful way to get parents and family members more involved in Art Education," said Maria Smith.www.artsonia.com.

Anyone can view the school gallery online at:

All of Artsonia's artwork (nearly 5 million and counting!) are viewable online, and any teacher or parent can create an online art gallery for their child or school. Artsonia provides several online features such as fan clubs and personal guestbooks, as a way for families to encourage the creativity and imaginations of their young artists.

Headquartered in Gurnee, Ill., Artsonia was established in 2000 as an online kid's art museum providing free, educational resources for kids, families and schools to create art projects. Since its inception, Artsonia continues to integrate technology in the classroom, develop multi-cultural understanding through art and increase family involvement in children's education. Smocks are Now Available!
I have made a class set of smocks. Smocks are available for every student who comes to art class. All students will be asked to put one on when we are painting. They do not cover the sleeves. Students are told to roll up or push up sleeves when painting.

The smock is similiar to the drawing (without the flowers and butterflies) Image courtesy of www.howstuffworks.com

November Art Classes.....
Kindergarten
Kindergartners created clay pinch pots. This required students to roll, push and pinch clay into a plastic cup. When the clay is leather hard i will pop it from the cup and it will then be fired in the kiln. Students will then be able to glaze the cup. Students will learn how to draw a tree from the trunk to all the large branches using their space as they go. Leaves will be sponge painted onto the tree. Finally students will discover the craft of weaving. This will be done by taking pre cut strips of paper and weaving them into a large sheet of paper.

First Grade
Sunflower paintings were created by the first graders. They learned again about the warm color group and that any one of the cool color group members will enable those warm colored sunflowers to stand out. The background of the paintings will be covered with one or all the cool colors. Students will then create a footed pinch pot made of clay. Students will build on their previous knowledge of building a bowl using the pinch pot method as they did last year with the addition of 4 feet for the bottom of the bowl.

Second Grade
Second graders are starting a multi media tree painting. Multi media means that they will be using many different kinds of materials to create their tree paintings. Materials include tissue paper, oil pastels paper and paint. Students will then celebrate the ancient Native American culture by creating a shield and a clay false face.

Third Grade
We are finishing up a self portrait collage which will depict the artist looking out a window as Autumn leaves fall past the window. Students will then create leaf prints and finish the month with Warm/Cool paper weavings.

Fourth Grade
Students are revisiting a concept from last year which is the study of positive and negative shapes. This time students will take a closer look at an organic shape and complimentary color pairs to create a dynamic collage. We will finish out the month of November with a pumpkin drawing which will enable students to learn how to show volume light and shadow in a drawing.

Fifth Grade
Students looked at a PowerPoint presentation of masks of many cultures. We discussed why people wore masks thousands of years ago. Students have been given the task of creating a paper mask which must how symmetry, large exaggerated features and use their knowledge of the design elements as they build an expressive paper mask.
